What's going viral?
Instagram user 'officia_ap_sharma' shared a viral video (archive link) on July 19, 2025. The video description reads “The horrifying floods of Pakistan.”
investigation:
To investigate the virus posts, I analyzed the video intimately and noticed some inconsistencies. For example, the trees appear to be shaking violently like strong winds, but the people's clothing on the roof remain largely still. Furthermore, the movements of individuals, especially hands and head gestures, are stiff and robotic. These inconsistencies raised doubts that video could be generated.
To further check, I decided to use an AI detection tool to analyze the video. The Hive Moderation tool showed a 99.9% chance that video will be generated by AI.
Additionally, the AI detection tool “Cantilux” has detected an 80% or more chance that video will be generated by AI.
Another AI detection tool was “AI” and flagged it as likely that AI would be generated.
To check further, we contacted AI expert Azahar Machwe. AzaharMachwe confirmed that this video is being operated by AI.
Current flood situation in Pakistan:
The viral video is fake, but Pakistan is actually facing a serious flood crisis. On July 21, 2025, One India reported that “the death toll from rain and flood-related incidents reached 216, with 13 new deaths occurring in the last 24 hours, and Pakistan's Disaster Management Agency cited. The Instagram user “Officia_ap_sharma” who shared the viral video has one or more followers.
