Famous Taiwanese sculptor Ju Ming, who made his name in Taiwan’s art history with “Tai Chi” in 1976, died Saturday at his home. Ju’s works of art have had an impact on many and have always had humanity at the center.
In an interview with CTS before his death, Ju said he came from a poor family in Tongxiao, Miaoli County. The youngest of 11 children, he always wanted to grow up fast and help his mother because she had to work in the middle of the night.
Starting out as a wood carver, Ju always wanted to improve his skills. He went to see Yang Yingfeng, a famous sculptor at the time, and was advised to change his name from Zhu Chuantai to Zhu Ming.
Yang was invited to hold an exhibition at the museum, but said that the museum should have Ju’s work inside. This incident gave Ju the opportunity to show the world his talent with his iconic sculptural series ‘Tai Chi’. There he carved steel, bronze, and wood into human form. The artwork was a huge success, and Ju went on to acclaim for a series of sculptures.
Ju has a wife and two children.
