VFX house DNEG acquires AI company Prime Focus Technologies

DNEG Group, the visual effects studio and entertainment services technology company known for producing films such as Dune and Oppenheimer, has acquired Prime Focus Technologies, an AI-powered media technology company.

The objective of the acquisition is to enable the Group to leverage PFT's media workflow and automation software suites, Clear and Clear AI, to offer streaming platforms, studios, broadcasters and brands transformational solutions helping them manage content, video collaboration and automation in their content production and distribution processes.

“The acquisition of PFT's SaaS business strengthens DNEG Group's position as an end-to-end solutions provider, enabling it to expand into media technology and distribution services, including fulfilment, localisation and marketing, enabling the Group's global M&E customer base to realise financial, operational and strategic benefits by managing the entire content lifecycle with one trusted partner,” the statement said.

The completion of the acquisition follows last week's announcement by Abu Dhabi-based investment giant United Al Saqer Group to invest $200 million in DNEG Group, which will help launch the company's new division, Brahma, which is developing “a comprehensive AI-powered photorealistic CGI creator that democratizes photorealistic content creation across a wide range of applications.”

American Film Institute Announces AFI Conservatory 2024-25 Canva Fellowship Recipients

The American Film Institute has announced the recipients of the AFI Conservatory’s 2024-2025 Canva Fellowships.

The six recipients are Eliana Alcroumre (director), Catherine “Silas” Clodi (cinematography), Frida Gonzalez (editor), Sierra Hendrix (producer), Kaili Reynolds (art design) and Lindsay “Elle” Tilden (screenplay). Each of the six recipients will receive a $40,000 scholarship, for a total of $240,000, throughout the two-year AFI Conservatory MFA program.

The fellows will begin attending the AFI Conservatory this fall.

For the second year in a row, Canva has partnered with AFI to further their shared mission of educating and inspiring the next generation of filmmakers to create visually impactful work. The scholarship will support one fellow from each of the six AFI Conservatory disciplines: cinematography, direction, editing, producing, art design and screenwriting.

“The AFI Conservatory is committed to educating emerging filmmakers both in the craft of filmmaking and how to become leaders in the creative community,” said Susan Raskin, Dean of the AFI Conservatory. “We're grateful that Canva will collaborate with us to continue to create new opportunities for AFI filmmakers to share their voices and diverse stories with the world.”

American Pavilion Student Program Launches in Australia

The American Pavilion will expand its student programs to Sydney, Australia, launching an AmPav Student Intensive at SXSW-Sydney in October.

Running from 13-21 October, the program will offer exclusive access to festival action at SXSW Sydney, networking opportunities, cultural exploration in Australia and industry insights from leaders in film, music, technology, interactive media and more.
