QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. (InvestigateTV) — Automotive dealers are using artificial intelligence to discover potential safety and maintenance issues with their vehicles.
“It’s like an MRI for your vehicle,” says Dave Flores, UVEye’s sales manager.
The UVEye system uses more than 10 cameras to image vehicles passing through the high-tech arch from all angles, including the undercarriage.
“What we’re doing is using machine learning AI to try to detect all the damage on that vehicle, including tire safety issues like bulges,” Flores said.
At Earnhardt Chevrolet’s service department in Arizona, high-tech scanners help save time and diagnose problems that might otherwise go undetected.
“It’s transparent to the customer. It’s instantaneous. It can be sent to the customer. It can be emailed. The customer can immediately see what the report is for their car,” said Nick Wallag, the dealership’s parts and service director. “Game changer. 100 percent.”
It only takes a few seconds to pass through the arch. Within an additional 45 seconds, a report is created with a comprehensive view of the vehicle’s undercarriage.
“There are 900 photos here,” Flores said. “It all comes together and what we’re looking for is oil leaks, oil seepage, damaged shields.”
UVeye also detects body damage, dents, and scratches as small as 2 millimeters. That wasn’t the original goal.
“It started in Israel,” Flores said. “It was built for bomb detection. After about 400,000 scans, it started detecting oil leaks. That’s when we realized this could be useful for the automotive industry.”
This includes rental cars. Hertz uses this technology in some stores to scan rental items upon return.
