Researcher mobility, joint scientific cooperation and a partnership to accelerate innovation between Germany and Canada – Vector researcher Shaina Raza to speak at HAICON 2026
TORONTO, June 11, 2026 (Globe Newswire) — Vector Institute today announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Helmholtz München, one of Germany’s leading health and environmental research centers, to strengthen international collaboration in artificial intelligence and machine learning.
The agreement, signed between the Vector Institute and the Computational Health Center (CHC) at Helmholtz Munich, establishes a formal framework for collaborative research, researcher exchanges, faculty affiliations, and coordinated engagement in bilateral funding programs spanning Canada and Germany.

The Computational Health Center at Helmholtz Munich develops applied AI and integrated machine learning methods to advance precision medicine and biomedical discovery, including approaches to cohort multi-omics data at both the cellular and population level for single-cell time-series analysis.
Under this memorandum, both organizations committed to:
- Human resources exchange and researcher mobility – Coordinate short-term research visits, PhD exchanges, and postdoctoral mobility programs to foster collaborative scientific research.
- Joint research and academic cooperation – Jointly organize workshops, seminars, and symposiums, and promote joint publications and joint research projects.
- Faculty affiliation and visit schedule – Deepen mentoring and co-supervision through visiting scholar roles and the appointment of affiliated researchers.
- Building a German-Canadian ecosystem – Explore opportunities within the Canada-Germany Digital Alliance and consider coordinated engagement with funding mechanisms including Horizon Europe and federal research programs in both countries.
The Memorandum of Understanding is effective immediately and will be valid for two years, with the option to extend it for a further two years subject to mutual agreement.
Vector researchers speak at HAICON 2026
Demonstrating the early momentum of the partnership, Vector Institute Applied Machine Learning Scientist (Responsible AI) said: Dr. Shaina Raza It was recently presented at the HAICON 2026 Workshop and Tutorial Day organized by Helmholtz München. June 8, 2026. Her participation was part of the session “The State of the Benchmarking Field: Lessons Learned from the First Half of the UNLOCK Initiative.” This included speakers from institutions such as KIT, DKFZ and Friedrich Schiller University Jena, who considered best practices for establishing benchmarks across emerging fields.
