Duolingo CEO Louis von Ahn has announced that the company will no longer evaluate employees based on how much they use artificial intelligence (AI) in their work. The Fortune It was reported on Tuesday.
The CEO made it clear that performance reviews prioritize the quality of results and output, not how well AI tools are integrated into workflows. The Fortune Reported. The move followed concerns from employees who felt increasing pressure to deploy AI tools “for AI’s sake,” even in situations where they did not meaningfully improve outcomes, the report added.
Fortune quoted Ahn as saying, “Rather than taking responsibility for the actual results, it felt like they were trying to push something that didn’t fit the bill in some cases.”
He also said the decision was driven by direct feedback from employees, who were wondering if they were expected to use AI tools even when they added little value. Therefore, leaders need to rethink their frameworks and separate broader AI goals from individual performance metrics, the report added.
The Fortune Ahn also cited the Silicon Valley Girl podcast, which aired earlier this month, in which he acknowledged that the company has moved away from its previous plans to formally include the use of AI in its ratings. He said, “The most important thing in performance is that you’re doing your job as well as possible, whatever it is you’re doing.”
He said AI could be beneficial, but “if you can’t do it, I’m not going to force you to do it.”
Additionally, he said previous approaches risked focusing on activities rather than actual results.
