Use of AI and espionage: Why Iran threatened to target 18 US companies in the Gulf

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) has issued a warning to major US companies operating in West Asia that their infrastructure will be targeted.

The Revolutionary Guards said U.S. companies would be targeted.

The Revolutionary Guards said American companies, as well as those working at military bases in the West Asian region, would be targeted on April 1 if more Iranian leaders are killed.

The 18 companies listed as threats by the IRGC included Microsoft, Google, Apple, Intel, IBM, Tesla, and Boeing. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed in an official statement that the companies were “actively supporting US and Israeli terrorist activities inside Iran by providing espionage services,” Iranian state media outlet Press TV reported.

“AI used to design terrorist operations”: IRGC

Iranian state media Press TV noted that the Revolutionary Guards classified these companies as “warmongering spy organizations with ties to the US government.” The Guard further claimed that the “artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet communications technology (ICT) services” used by these companies had become “key elements in the planning of terrorist operations and the tracking of assassination targets by the United States and Israel inside Iran.”

The Revolutionary Guards said in a statement that these companies, including “big tech” companies such as Apple, Google, Meta and Microsoft, must prepare for retaliatory attacks.

According to a report by news agency ANI, the defense forces have specified that the plan for a “retaliatory strike starting at 8:00 PM Iranian time on April 1” will be devastating. It warned that local branches of these companies would be “wiped out.”

“Major institutions involved in terrorist activities are legitimate targets”: Revolutionary Guards statement

The Iranian government claimed that previous diplomatic warnings had been ignored, and that the United States and Israel continued their “terrorist operations” despite Iranian protests.

Targeted attacks on Iran were also reported on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of several Iranian nationals. “In response to this terrorist operation, key institutions involved in terrorist activities will henceforth be considered legitimate targets,” the Revolutionary Guards said in a statement.

The National Guard called on employees working at these companies to “immediately leave their workplaces to save their lives,” and advised residents living “within a radius of one kilometer” to evacuate.
