New Delhi: The US Air Force has announced its latest milestone in bringing artificial intelligence (AI) to the pilot's seat. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) revealed on Thursday that an AI-controlled jet conducted dogfights with human pilots during a test conducted last year, The Verge reported.
DARPA also shared a seven-minute video on social media platform YouTube showcasing an air combat test between AI and human-piloted F-16s.
DARPA's AI integration efforts began in December 2022 as part of the Air Combat Evolution (ACE) program and have achieved notable results. Through extensive experimentation, DARPA has designed an AI system that can autonomously pilot a fighter jet while adhering to the Air Force's strict safety protocols.
To move from simulation to real-world applications, DARPA installed an AI system on the experimental aircraft X-62A. This important step culminated in a successful air-to-air combat test with a human-piloted F-16 in September 2023 at Edwards Air Force Base, California.
Importantly, the human pilot aboard the X-62A retained control authority and had the ability to override the AI system if necessary. However, as DARPA reports, such intervention proved unnecessary throughout the encounter. The engagement showed both aircraft conducting a “high-aspect nose-to-head engagement,” approaching within 2,000 feet at speeds up to 1,200 miles per hour.
