Curtin makes some changes to Turnitin (a text matching tool that checks original materials) used in student evaluations.

from January 1st 2026Turnitin's AI writing detection feature will be disabled and enabled on all campuses and research periods. This change is to promote trust and clarity within modern academic culture, continually improving assessments to ensure that they are safe, fair, relevant and ready for the future.

What does this mean for you in 2025?

  • Nothing will change this year. Please continue submitting your work through Turnitin as usual.
  • Allocations will continue to be evaluated fairly and consistently.
  • Follow the evaluation instructions for proper use of Gen-AI

What does this mean for you in 2026?

  • Nothing will change as to how your assignment will be submitted to Turnitin.
  • Only Turnitin's Gen-AI detection feature is disabled, and normal text matching originality checks become active.
  • Your work will continue to be reviewed and evaluated fairly and consistently for compliance with academic integrity instructions.
  • We recommend using available writing tools, such as Curtin Grammarly and Authorship Function.
  • Follow the evaluation instructions for proper use of Gen-AI.
  • Over time, we may notice new approaches to assessment that reflect how the workplace uses digital tools, including AI.

Use AI responsibly

If AI tools are permitted in evaluations, remember:

  • Ai should Support your learningdo not replace it.
  • You will always be responsible for the accuracy and completeness of the work you submit.
