Several social media platforms have come under fire over the years for copying TikTok’s features. But the verical video platform is testing a new feature that it really hopes other networks will emulate: the ability to limit AI-generated videos and images in their feeds.
This week, TikTok shared new efforts to help viewers discover AI-generated content, and a new tool to help users restrict computer-generated content altogether was included in the list of changes.
This next tool is part of TikTok’s existing topic management tools, and like the existing tools, it uses sliders to give users more control over what appears in their feed. What’s changing is that users will soon be able to see an AI-generated content slider within the tool.
Adjusting this slider allows users to adjust their feed to include more (gags) or less (yay!) AI-generated content. However, while this tool is a slider, all users can do with it is “see less” of the AI-generated content. The tool doesn’t seem to completely eliminate AI-generated content.
This feature is under testing and may require tweaking. Still, this is a feature I’d like other networks to emulate.
For example, Instagram and Facebook don’t have many tools to restrict AI content beyond muting meta AI in chats. I’ve been bothered by some fake videos in my feed. Many of them were viral fakes, like a rabbit jumping on a trampoline.
The AI-limiting slider isn’t the only AI-focused announcement TikTok has shared. The platform is also testing an invisible watermark applied to content created on the TikTok platform that would specify whether AI is used.
TikTok already participates in C2PA Content Credentials, but says those AI labels may be removed. TikTok is working on adding an invisible watermark layer to make it harder to remove and making its AI labels more accurate.
TikTok says it will begin testing “in the coming weeks.”
