At a key milestone for global medical innovation, the World Health Organization (WHO) has released a technical brief entitled “Mapping the application of artificial intelligence in traditional medicine.”
This release follows India's proposal on the subject, leading to the development of the first roadmap for applying AI to traditional medicine.
This document introduces the range of AI-driven applications for Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, Sowarigupa and Homeopathy. This includes diagnostic support systems that integrate traditional methods such as pulse reading, tongue testing, and prakriti assessment with machine learning algorithms and deep neural networks. These efforts increase diagnostic accuracy and enable personalized preventive care.
One outstanding feature of the WHO brief is its mention of Ayurgenomics, a scientific breakthrough that combines genomics with Ayurvedic principles. The objective of this initiative is to identify predictive disease markers and personalize health recommendations using AI-based analyses of the Ayurvedic constitution type. The document also highlights efforts to decipher the genome and molecular basis of herbal formulations for reuse in modern disease conditions. This is a major leap into integrating traditional wisdom with modern science.
India's initiatives to digitalize traditional knowledge, such as the Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL), have been praised as a global model of preservation and responsible use of Indigenous medical heritage. Furthermore, AI-powered tools are used for cataloging and semantic analysis of ancient texts, providing easy access to time-tested therapeutic knowledge.
Another important aspect recognized by the WHO is the identification of drug action pathways, comparative studies on systems such as Ayurveda, TCM, and Unani, and the development of artificial chemical sensors to assess traditional parameters such as RASA, Guna, and Virya. These technical interventions help validate and modernize traditional formulations.
The document also praises India's widespread efforts to incorporate digital platforms for online consultations, promote digital literacy among Ayush practitioners, and build interoperable systems to integrate traditional medicine with mainstream healthcare.
