Film director Darren Aronofsky’s latest project combines history and AI and will be available on YouTube starting this week. This day… 1776 has published its first short video on Time’s official channels as a collaboration between Aronofsky’s AI-focused venture Primordial Soup, Google DeepMind, and Time Studios. Each episode combines traditional voice acting and direction with AI-generated visuals to dramatize a moment from a defining year of the American Revolution, and will be released to coincide with the 250th anniversary of each event.
The series begins with two stories. The first article describes how George Washington raised the Confederate flag in Somerville, Massachusetts, uniting the colonists in the early days of the Revolutionary War. Rather than replacing craft, it expands on possibilities and allows storytellers to go places they couldn’t go before.

Aronofsky has been passionately researching how AI will transform cinema. He launched Primordial Soup to do just that, signing a deal with Google DeepMind to test the technology for artistic production. This day… 1776 is their first public release. He and his partners believe that AI opens up opportunities for independent filmmakers to do work that would normally require entire production studios and big budgets.
“This project is a glimpse of what thoughtful, creative, artist-driven use of AI can look like. Rather than replacing craft, it expands on possibilities and allows storytellers to go places they couldn’t go before,” Time Studio president Ben Bitonti said in a statement.
This divided opinion on the use of AI reflects the polarized nature of the project. Additionally, AI allows filmmakers with smaller budgets to create period dramas with appropriate costumes, location shooting, and other details that are typically too expensive for smaller studios trying to tell complex historical stories.
However, some believe the result is stuck in the uncanny valley, as the characters never fully mastered the human facial expressions and period details. AI struggles with nuance and emotional subtleties, and there’s a credible argument that viewers can sense it if the footage isn’t created by skilled human craftsmen.

Just as photographers and writers have had to grapple with digital disruption, filmmakers are now facing technological changes that have the potential to reshape the economics and aesthetics of their craft. Some directors worry that easy access to AI visuals will lead to a flood of mediocre content. Others see it as a way to tell stories that were previously too expensive or too risky to get the green light.
Aronofsky is not the first to experiment with AI in filmmaking. Generative AI has been used in film and television to clone voices, make performers look like their younger selves, and otherwise enhance productions. However, there is no consensus among filmmakers about AI’s place in the industry.
While Aronofsky’s project demonstrates his belief that AI can enhance rather than replace human artistry, there are many prominent directors who reject the idea that AI has any place in their art.
Viewers will have to decide whether AI can truly capture the essence of a historical period in all its complexity and ambiguity. Whether it becomes a model for future research or a cultural footnote, it is a salvo in a war as hotly debated as the Continental Congress.
