The Government of Kerala has decided to install AI cameras on national and state roads across the state as part of the Safe Kerala project with the aim of reducing traffic accidents and violations of traffic rules. The agency has installed 726 AI cameras statewide as part of the project, and the camera installation is complete. These cameras will start issuing charangs from April 20, 2023. 232 million from Kerala Road Transport Authority funding for this project.
A video uploaded by Asianet News to its YouTube channel shows how these newly installed AI cameras work to catch criminals. In the video, the reporter is at a data center in Thiruvananthapuram set up by Keltron as instructed by the Kerala MVD. This is the main data center and there are other sub data centers in every district. The video shows feeds from cameras installed in various parts of the state. The MVD officer in the video said the Thiruvananthapuram facility is the hub and receives data from all districts. The photos that received the data are sorted and transferred to each area depending on the location.

The video report also shows clear images that the AI camera can capture. The camera will automatically detect a set number of violations and click photos. The image is then sent to the head office and forwarded from the head office to the sub data center where the charang is issued. Cameras installed on the road can click high-quality images even at night, as demonstrated in the video.

Cameras currently cover offenses such as riding a motorcycle without a helmet, triple driving, using a mobile phone while driving or riding, driving without a seatbelt, speeding, parking illegally, jumping over traffic lights, etc. can be detected. As part of the Safe Kerala project, MVD officials conduct drives to ensure people follow rules such as lane rules, speed limits, and no stopping at crosswalks. The AI camera system is said to be launched by the Chief Minister of Kerala by 3:30 pm the next day.
The department also announced the amount of fines for the above violations. Riding a motorcycle without a helmet will result in a fine of Rs. $500, tripled will result in a fine of Rs. 1,000.
