For those of you who watched the Google I/O event on May 10th, just before the keynote session, the DJ played a very catchy beat, and many at the event wore their shoes to match. You should have noticed that I was hitting the . The great thing about that music is that it wasn’t made by humans. Instead, all the music was produced by Google’s new AI platform called MusicLM. The tool isn’t public yet, but you can try it out in the AI Test Kitchen on Google Labs. Let’s see what it’s all about.
Google MusicLM: AI music generator
Google will first announce MusicLM in January 2023. This unique audio generation platform creates music as a modeling task between hierarchical sequences. The model is trained on a huge data library that describes music files piece by piece so that the AI can understand what it’s asking for. So all the user needs to do is enter a prompt describing the type of music they want to generate, and the platform does the rest.
Google announced this and said in a blog post that it “demonstrates that MusicLM can be conditioned on both text and melody in that it can transform whistling and humming melodies according to the style described in the text caption.”
How to sign up for MusicLM
Before using the AI music generation tool, you need to sign up for the platform first. The good news is that starting on his May 10th, Google is letting people sign up in just a few steps.
First, you need to visit Google’s AI Test Kitchen or Google Labs and enter your details to sign up for the service. Once done, you can move on to creating your own music. Please note that this service is not available in all countries, so if it is not available in your area, you will have to wait until it becomes available.
How MusicLM works
Once on the platform home page, simply navigate to the text field and enter the prompt. Be sure to add something descriptive to create music that matches exactly what you’re looking for.
For example, you could write something like, “It’s fast-paced, bright, has a catchy electric guitar riff, is repetitive and easy to remember, but contains unusual sounds like cymbal crashes and drum rolls.” The clearer the prompt, the more likely you are to get something close to your taste.
