There are no more hall exams: IIM Ranchi employs AI business projects for student evaluation

AI News

The Institute of Management of India (IIM Ranchi) has introduced a groundbreaking change in its evaluation system by replacing traditional Hall-based medium-term exams with AI integrated business problem-solving projects under the “Integrated AI” (WAI) initiative.

This transformation will be applied to all courses beginning this semester, and aims to better prepare students for the evolving demands of the modern business environment by embedding artificial intelligence at the core of the assessment.

Innovative AI Integration Evaluation: Bridging Theory and Practice

The WAI initiative allows students to work in collaboration with AI systems on real-world or simulated business challenges. Instead of pen and paper exams, students should demonstrate their ability to use AI tools to assess applied problem-solving, logic, ethics and practical thinking.

Laboratory staff, including director Dr. Deepak Srivastava, stressed that traditional theory learning alone is not enough. Students need practical experience in partnering with AI to solve complex challenges.

Chairman Gaurav Manohar Marathe explained that this hybrid model balances basic academic knowledge with technical flow ency, cultivating analytical reasoning along with actual capabilities.

Context and background: Meet modern educational needs

This reform is part of a broader global and national trend towards education modernization, where assessment systems are evolving to integrate technology and focus on skill-based learning. Recognizing that traditional testing often fails complex decisions involving AI, IIM Ranchi has become a pioneer of Indian administrative institutions by formalizing the assessments that drive AI.

In addition to academic innovation, the Institute is amending attendance policies to encourage flexible, positive engagement and encourage students to take ownership of their learning journey through freedom combined with responsibility.

The integration of AI in assessment also promotes critical thinking, collaboration and adaptability among students, preparing them not only for current challenges but for future innovation in the business ecosystem.

Impact on student learning and future preparation

The WAI model encourages students to organically develop human and collaboration skills, an important skill in today's workplace. Students acquire practical capabilities such as selecting the right AI tools, interpreting AI generated insights, effectively communicating with AI systems, and integrating technology and human judgment.

This practical experience addresses a long-standing gap in which executive alumni often lack practical exposure to AI collaboration. Importantly, the final exam continues in a traditional format, complementing it with technology-driven applied learning, while preserving the rigour of the analysis, thereby creating a balanced ecosystem of assessment.

IIM Ranchi's AI-driven assessment addresses challenges such as equitable access and ongoing curriculum improvement, promoting practical skills, the use of ethical AI, and industry collaboration, increasing employment potential.

A logical Indian perspective

The logical India sees the bold move of IIM Ranchi as a necessary and progressive step towards education that is consistent with the demands of a digitally interconnected world. By incorporating AI collaboration into core assessments, the Institute promotes empathy for values and ethical judgments that are important for social harmony and coexistence.

As education reforms progress, it is important to embed ethical principles to ensure equitable access to AI tools and to promote comprehensive social advancement. This comprehensive shift at IIM Ranchi not only modernizes assessments, but also cultivates responsible and competent professionals ready for an Ai-Augmented business environment.
