Senior officials from both the United States and China expressed their concerns to the other side during their first dialogue on the safe use of artificial intelligence, the two countries announced on Wednesday.

After Tuesday's meeting in Geneva on emerging risks related to advanced AI, White House National Security Council spokesperson Adrian Watson said the United States had expressed concern about the misuse of new technologies, including by China.

He said in a statement that the officials had “candid and constructive discussions” and that the United States emphasized “the importance of ensuring the safety, security, and reliability of AI systems.”

Meanwhile, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Chinese government has expressed dissatisfaction with US regulations in the AI field.

The United States and its allies are tightening export controls on cutting-edge semiconductors and other technology to China as part of an effort to prevent the Asian power from using it for military modernization.

Ahead of the one-day meeting, a senior U.S. government official said the dialogue would be “an opportunity to exchange views on the technical risks of AI and to directly communicate on our respective areas of concern, rather than focusing on specific deliverables.” focus.” ”

The start of these talks, which will involve senior officials from various government agencies, was agreed upon in November during the first face-to-face meeting between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping in a year.

The two presidents met near San Francisco and agreed to increase communication lines and take a range of measures to reduce the temperature of the conflict between the world's two largest economies.
