The project is being led by a consortium including collaborative technical experts from the Agri-EPI Centre, crop mapping experts from Outfield Technologies, robotics engineers from Antobotto, viticulture consultants from Vinescapes and robotic mapping researchers from the University of Lincoln.

Elliot Dixon, head of engineering at the Agri EPI Centre, said there was a “strong need” for the industry to improve data integration to unlock the potential of precision agriculture.

“We measure over 200 chemical properties for each beer, conduct quantitative and descriptive sensory analysis by a trained tasting panel, and map the data from over 180,000 consumer reviews to train 10 machine learning models,” the scientists said.

According to the study, “predicting and understanding food perception and evaluation remains one of the great challenges in food science,” but accurately modeling flavor and evaluation could “open up important opportunities for both producers and consumers, including quality control, product fingerprinting, counterfeit detection, spoilage detection, and the development of new products and product combinations.”

Additionally, a new artificial intelligence-based tool has been developed that incorporates input from scientists and offers wine recommendations based on consumers’ personal tastes and budgets.

The digital “taste map” aims to guide drinkers to their natural preferences, claiming to “democratize” the wine selection process. Rather than enlisting the help of a sommelier or wine expert, the tool aims to provide “an accessible, affordable way for individuals to discover wine.”
