The EU sticks to the AI rules timeline
BRUSSELS (Reuters) – The European Union's landmark rules on artificial intelligence will be rolled out according to the legal schedule of the law, the Commission said Friday it rejected calls from some businesses and countries.
Google owner Alphabet (Googl.o), Facebook owner Meta (Meta.o), and other US companies, as well as European companies such as Mistral and ASML (ASML.AS) have recently urged the Commission to delay AI Act for many years.
“We've certainly seen a lot of reports, a lot of letters, a lot of things being said in the AI Act. Let's be as clear as possible. There's no clock. There's no bounty period. There's no pause.”
“The legal text has established legal deadlines. The regulations kicked in February, the general AI model obligations will commence in August and the risk model obligations will kick next year, August 2026,” he said.
The committee plans to propose steps to simplify digital rules towards the end of the year, including reducing reporting on small business obligations.
Some companies have expressed concern about the compliance costs and strict requirements of AI rules. It aims to set guardrails on technology keys for multiple sectors of the economy and are now led by the US and China.
