The Dutch privacy regulator AP warns millions of Dutch LinkedIn users to change their settings if they do not want to use profile data to train artificial intelligence systems.
LinkedIn does not include plans to train the system using names, photos, job titles, work experiences, education, locations, skills, public posts, articles, comments, comments, comments, and votes from European users, but does not include private messages.
The “Generated AI Improvement” option is turned on by default. This means that everyone's information will automatically be included unless they opt out by November 3rd.
Associated Press Vice Chair Monique Verdier said the plan contains “a great risk.” “When data is included in the model, you lose control. You can't simply re-extract it and it's difficult to predict the outcome,” she said.
“If you don't want to use data for AI training, we'll encourage everyone to adjust their settings by November 3rd,” she said.
It is not yet clear whether LinkedIn will be allowed to proceed with the plan. The company is headquartered in Dublin and is under the control of Ireland's privacy regulators.
The AP said it has been working with its Irish counterparts and other EU authorities and has already received complaints about the new policy.
How to turn it off
If you do not want to include information, you must turn off the default settings by November 3rd. You must follow this link provided by the AP or do it manually. Open LinkedIn, go to Settings & Privacy, select Data Privacy, then click on Data to improve Generated AI to turn off the settings.
