The battle has begun in the US against AI applications that generate intimate images

San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu has begun the process of forcibly removing 13 applications designed to use neural networks to create intimate images. In his opinion, the activities of these services are in direct violation of California law on combating deepfake pornography.

What are these programs and how do they work?

There are 13 specific software products in question, 8 of which are in the App Store and 5 on Google Play. Developers intentionally use deceptive tactics. That is, the software is positioned as a regular program to “replace a person”, and the ability to create sexual content is hidden and only accessible after installation.

Prosecutor’s position and claims against companies

David Chiu emphasizes that generating intimate content without a user’s consent is illegal and unacceptable. Prosecutors harshly criticized the tech giants. He said Apple and Google are receiving millions of dollars in fee deductions from the activity of these “undressing apps” and are now being forced to fundamentally revise their approach to content moderation.

Google and Apple’s answer

Google representative Dan Jackson said the company is already fighting such content. To date, hundreds of applications that violate security policy rules have been removed, including the five Android applications cited by prosecutors. Google also introduced restrictions on searches related to terms such as “nudify.” There was no official comment from Apple at the time of publishing this article.

Scale of the problem: revenue and coverage
