Tesla is looking to expand its Autopilot division after weeks of mass layoffs at the company.
Tesla posted more than a dozen positions related to driver assistance software and AI on its careers page this week. The positions are based at Tesla's engineering headquarters in Palo Alto, California, and include software engineering roles for Autopilot's internal and external user interfaces, as well as an AI research role on the Autopilot team.
Tesla disbanded its public relations team several years ago and did not respond to requests for comment.
Tesla removed more than 3,000 job listings from its website in early May, just weeks after it began its round of layoffs. Until this week, the main jobs listed on Tesla's site were in its Manufacturing Development Program, a training program based at community colleges near the company's three U.S. factories that aims to equip workers with the skills they need to move into production associate roles at the factories.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk told employees on April 14 that the company plans to cut more than 10% of its workforce. Over the past few weeks, Tesla has continued to cut staff, including reportedly cutting some Supercharger staff and then rehiring them. In May, Tesla began rescinding some job offers to new employees and interns.
According to a report by The Information, Musk told executives in April that Tesla “needs to get serious about reducing staff numbers and cutting costs.”
The company has faced headwinds in recent months due to sluggish sales across the electric vehicle industry. Musk has said the company is “between two great waves of growth” and has promoted Tesla's self-driving technology as a key driver of growth. The CEO said in April that the company's first robot taxi would be unveiled on Aug. 8.
