The surge in demand for artificial intelligence is significantly increasing global energy consumption. Predictions for future data center energy usage are high and require action from both private and public sectors.

Big technology companies are devoting significant funding and public relations efforts to developing renewable energy sources to meet the growing demand for electricity. But the sector is also contributing to the expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure, calling into question existing plans to reduce carbon emissions.

For example, the data centers operated by Google alone consume as much electricity as many entire counties. In 2024, these facilities used approximately 30.8 million megawatt-hours of electricity. This is almost double the level recorded a few years ago. Google’s parent company, Alphabet, is seeking to counter this energy impact through notable investments in clean energy startups and a $10 million commitment to a fund focused on grid reliability and clean energy projects.

This financial commitment is just one part of Alphabet’s broader spending. Alphabet plans to invest about $90 billion in capital expenditures in 2025 and nearly double that to $185 billion in 2026, according to a recent report from market intelligence platform Cleanview. According to the report, the majority of these funds are going towards data centers and the necessary power infrastructure. This expansion is not just focused on clean energy, as Alphabet is also developing natural gas resources to support generative AI operations.

One specific project involves a partnership with Crusoe Energy to build a data center campus in North Texas. Campus plans include both a wind farm and a large natural gas facility. Company representatives have publicly highlighted investments in geothermal, nuclear fusion, advanced nuclear reactors and battery technology, suggesting these projects outline the company’s approach to energy challenges. However, when asked specifically about its strategic use of natural gas, the company declined to comment.
