A Pennsylvania state trooper has pleaded guilty to using state computers and databases to create AI-generated pornography.
Steven Kamnick, a police officer since 2011, is on unpaid leave after being charged in an investigation that found unusually high bandwidth usage on state-owned computers. Police say his crimes date back to 2020.
Kamnik appeared briefly in court Wednesday and admitted to creating the AI porn using images of the woman found in the state’s driver’s license system and images of a local judge that he recorded without her knowledge.
After an audit of his computer was conducted, state police discovered that he was using the computer for personal work and more than 10,000 images depicting adult pornography.
Police said the AI-generated pornography featured images of celebrities, state officials including local judges, Pennsylvania State Police officers and members of the public.
Authorities said Kamnik accessed PennDOT images and other state databases and recorded videos of women without their knowledge in locker rooms at state police barracks in Montgomery and Delaware counties.
Kamnik admitted on the stand that he possessed child pornography images and used his position as a state trooper to commit the crime. Prosecutors also said he stole the gun.
Investigators said some of the victims were targeted inside Kamnik’s home, where he took images from under the dining table and obtained photos of at least one person who was staying there.
Mr. Kamnick was originally charged with hundreds of criminal offenses, but he has been charged with just over a dozen and will undergo an evaluation before sentencing.
Lawyers for both sides declined to comment.
