SIOX FALLS, SD (Dakota News Now) – Healthcare in a state like South Dakota has a small population, plenty of land, and can be a major challenge to manage.
At a Rotary Club Conference in Sioux Falls, a group of healthcare advocates discussed some of the issues the system is facing today.
The Secretary of Health spoke with the Dakota News and how artificial intelligence can bridge the gap between some of these issues.
Secretary Melissa Magstadt said the department incorporates AI into small tasks such as summarizing large documents and writing emails, and uses it for a variety of purposes in the Epidemiology department.
“I don't think I've used this ability to understand yet, but I'm considering the Ministry of Health about how to analyze the data more thoroughly and how it can be used to determine the plan,” Magstadt said.
Magstadt said the use of AI, along with consistent investments in tools such as Telehealth and Mobile Clinics, will help expand healthcare to South Dakota's urban population, particularly rural communities.
“All of these works add to the part of the easy way to provide healthcare to those in need, whether in the South Dakota frontier or urban area, wherever they choose to live.
At the next Rotary Club meeting, the panel will discuss the development of healthcare providers for the next generation of South Dakotan.
