Sony’s gaming division has made an interesting acquisition, acquiring a UK-based group that creates simulated 3D images based on still photographs.

It was announced today that Sony Interactive Entertainment has acquired machine learning company Cinemarsive Labs. Although Cinemarsive is not a very public entity, Website and YouTube channel Get to the point. The company uses AI and machine learning to create immersive 3D views from images that can be viewed in VR. This could mean that PSVR2 isn’t finished yet and Sony may be tapping Cinemarsive Labs to power the next generation of VR2. Immersive entertainment of the futureprobably for PlayStation 6.
“Today, we are pleased to announce that SIE has entered into an agreement to acquire Cinemarsive Labs, a UK-based machine learning and computer vision company.” Sony said this, adding that the group will contribute to new rendering technologies, possibly enhancing Sony’s internal PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology.
“Following the acquisition, the Cinemarsive Labs team will join SIE’s Visual Computing Group (VCG) and contribute to our broader efforts to advance cutting-edge visual computing in games. This includes applying machine learning to enhance gameplay visuals, improve rendering techniques, and take player visual fidelity to new levels.”
Sony is going all-in on machine learning with the next-generation PlayStation 6, working with AMD to design and engineer the underlying technology through an ambitious initiative. A multi-year initiative called “Project Amethyst”. Sony is manufacturing PSSR and designing new custom chip designs, while AMD is also developing next-generation FSR solutions.
ML is also a big part of PS6 at the hardware level, with the console leveraging multiple new advancements including: Radiance Core, Neural Array, Universal Compression–All of this is made possible by new chips that have AI built into the silicon itself.
