Amazon has already cut 27,000 jobs in the last few months. The Associated Press reports that Amazon “is asking some employees to relocate to other cities as part of a return-to-office policy that requires employees to be in the office three days a week.”
An Amazon spokeswoman confirmed the move on Friday, but declined to comment on media reports that the tech giant is asking some employees from its smaller offices to move to its headquarters in a big city. Amazon has not provided details on how many employees will need to be relocated. Amazon spokesman Brad Glasser said the company will provide a “relocation allowance” to employees who are asked to move and will consider requests for exceptions on a case-by-case basis.
Business Insider previously reported, citing an internal message, that Amazon employees who refuse to move their teams closer to headquarters are told they must either find new jobs within the company or “volunteer” and leave the company.
“Working together at least three days a week increases our energy, collaboration and connection,” an Amazon spokesperson told The Associated Press, adding, “We’re hearing that from many of our employees and businesses around our office.”
