Researchers at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) and the Airi Institute have reached a milestone in solid battery technology.
Their technology could help future electric vehicles (EVs) increase by up to 50% on a single charge, while simultaneously enhancing safety and battery life.
This breakthrough was achieved by applying machine learning to accelerate the discovery of high-performance battery materials.
“Improved energy density, charge rate, solid battery stability, sensor response time, or switching times for member stars can be achieved through innovations in the architecture of devices and/or material components,” the researchers in the new research said.
“As a result, an understanding of the ion transport mechanism and its properties is essential for the design of advanced ion conductors.”
Neural networks can identify the most suitable material
Neural networks demonstrate the ability to quickly identify key solid battery components, namely solid electrolytes, and the optimum materials for their protective coatings.
Current EVs rely heavily on traditional lithium-ion batteries with liquid electrolytes, resulting in a mild fire risk. Meanwhile, solid state batteries utilize solid materials such as ceramics to carry out lithium ions, essentially improving safety and providing excellent energy density.
Automakers have long tried to integrate this technology, but the lack of suitable solid electrolytes presents a frightening challenge.
“Graph Neural Networks have identified new solid-state battery materials with high ion mobility and demonstrated that they can be more orders of magnitude higher than traditional quantum chemistry methods.
“This could speed up the development of new battery materials, as we have shown in predicting many protective coatings for solid-state battery electrolytes.”
The important role of protective coatings
This study also highlights the important role of protective coatings. These layers are essential for protecting the electrolyte from highly reactive metallic lithium anode and cathode materials.
Without them, the battery performance can drop rapidly, increasing the risk of short circuits.
“The lithium metal in the anode is a strong reducing agent, so almost all existing electrolytes come into contact with it. The cathode material is a strong oxidizing agent. When oxidized or reduced, the electrolyte can deteriorate performance or short-circuit.
Here, machine learning algorithms prove the tool. A large number of candidate materials are efficiently screened to identify those with ideal properties for durability and efficiency.
Practical applications for high-performance EVs
In a practical application, the researchers successfully exploited AI-powered methodology to discover a new coating material for Li10Gep2S12, a major candidate for solid battery electrolytes.
Their discoveries identified promising compounds such as Li3ALF6 and Li2ZnCl4, paving the way for the development of highly efficient and robust next-generation batteries.
This breakthrough is safer, more durable, and allows you to rebuild your energy storage environment with high-performance electric vehicles and portable electronics.
