AI For Business

LAS VEGAS – S4 Capital Executive Chairman Sir Martin Sorrell has a frank assessment of the future of advertising. Speaking with Beet.TV contributor David Kaplan at CES 2026, Sorrell said agent AI is “fundamentally challenging the model.”

Strategic and creativity are under attack

Sorrell argued that agent systems threaten the traditional agency stack.

“Strategy and creativity are under attack,” he said. “The big question is whether it can withstand this attack.”

He said customer demand is shifting towards mid- and lower-funnel performance. “Everyone is focused on the short term,” Sorrell said. “They want results quickly.” This pressure puts top-funnel brand building at risk, he added.

Short-term pressure favors nimble independents

Sorrell said the move will affect S4 Capital’s strengths, but insisted the brand remains important. “The brand makes the difference,” Soler says. “Building on a combination of strategic, creative, production and media.”

He noted that independents like Monks benefit from agility. “Independence is more flexible and more responsive,” he said.

A flat industry in a booming economy

Soler described the market as paradoxical. “The industry as a whole is flat,” he says. “It’s like the Twilight Zone.”

This flatness stands in contrast to solid corporate profits. He pointed to the 12% rise in the Standard & Poor’s 500 stock index last year as a sign of strong corporate health. Historically, he said, agency revenues have been closely tied to profits, adding: “That correlation has broken down.”

Media is concentrated, not fragmented

Soler rejected the idea that media fragmentation is accelerating. “Media is not fragmented,” he says. “You’re concentrating, aren’t you?”

He pointed to the platform scale of companies like Google, Metaplatform, Amazon, and TikTok, which account for a significant portion of global ad spending.

As a result, the CMO’s job has become “simpler, not more complex,” Soler said.

Fewer people, more automation

Soler predicted that job losses in the industry will continue and that AI will accelerate that trend.

“There will be fewer people,” he said. “You get four times the revenue with the same number of employees.”

Hyperscalers as nation-states

Soler described major technology platforms such as Google, Apple, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft as geopolitical actors.

“These are nation-states,” he said, comparing their size to major economies such as Britain and France, and cited a memorable analogy about Apple’s chief executive: “When the head of MI6 says, ‘Tim Cook is the president of this country.'”

CES suggests a role for more technical institutions

Soler said that while CES itself reflects changes in technology adoption, awareness among government agencies is declining.

“The agency has pretty much disappeared,” Sorrell said. “It’s very private and not public.”

This suggests a new mission for government agencies. They need to understand the system, not just the messaging.

“Agents will become technology consultants,” Sorrell said. “I don’t need to learn code anymore, but I need to understand code more.”
