NEW YORK, May 17 (Reuters) – Shell Corp (SHEL.L) said on Wednesday it will use AI-based technology from big data analytics firm Spark Cognition in deepwater exploration and production to boost offshore oil production. Announced.
SparkCognition’s AI algorithms process and analyze large amounts of seismic data in the search for new oilfields by Shell, the largest oil producer in the US Gulf of Mexico.
“We are committed to finding new and innovative ways to reinvent the way exploration works,” said Gabriel Guerra, Shell’s vice president of innovation and performance, in a statement.
The goal is to improve operational efficiency and speed, increasing productivity and exploration success rates. The new process could reduce the exploration period from nine months to less than nine days, the companies said.
“Generative AI for seismic imaging can actively disrupt the exploration process, with far-reaching implications,” said Bruce Porter, chief scientific officer at SparkCognition, based in Austin, Texas. I’m here.
The technology produces subsurface images with fewer seismic data scans than usual, which will help preserve the deep ocean, the companies said. Seismic technology sends sound waves to survey underground areas.
Reducing the number of seismic surveys would speed up exploration workflows and save on high-performance computing costs, they added.
