Shane Legg, co-founder and lead AGI scientist at Google DeepMind, recently shared a recruiting post on X (formerly Twitter) saying that AGI is on the horizon and could bring major changes to the global economy. Legg said in his post that he is looking to hire a senior economist to study how the economy will change after AGI arrives. “AGI is now upon us and will profoundly change many things, including the economy,” he wrote, adding, “I am currently in the process of hiring a senior economist to report to me to lead a small team studying post-AGI economics.” The post received responses from multiple users, including Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. In response to Shani Legge, Musk suggested using the AI chatbot Grok. “Try Grok,” Musk wrote, referring to the AI assistant developed by his company xAI and integrated into the X Platform.

In the post, Legg shared a link to the official job posting listing key responsibilities. “Artificial intelligence has the potential to be one of humanity’s most useful inventions. At Google DeepMind, we are a team of scientists, engineers, machine learning experts, and others who work together to advance the cutting edge of artificial intelligence. We use technology for the broad public good and scientific discovery, collaborating with others on important challenges while keeping safety and ethics top of mind,” the job posting states. The responsibilities of this role include:
- Lead and develop the research vision for the AGI economics workstream and identify key questions and priorities.
- Design and build economic simulations and models, including agent-based systems, to explore post-AGI scenarios.
- We conduct fundamental research on the long-term economic impacts of AGI and challenge existing assumptions about scarcity, wealth, and distribution.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of researchers across GDM.
- We collaborate with external experts and institutions to strengthen our research capacity and bring diverse perspectives to our work.
- Communicate research findings internally to senior stakeholders and externally through publications and other deliverables.
- Building and managing research teams.
