Several recent ransomware attacks offer perspective on evolving cybersecurity concerns within the industrial sector.

Gentex is A Michigan-based manufacturer of electronic safety systems for the automotive sector. They were attacked by a ransomware gang called Dunghill. Dunghill is believed to be a rebranded version of the Dark Angels ransomware gang that historically targeted the gaming and consumer electronics industries.

In early May, ABB, a global manufacturer of industrial components and infrastructure systems, also admitted to being victim of a ransomware attack. A group called Black Basta attacked the company’s Windows Active Directory and reportedly destroyed hundreds of devices.

What these attacks tell us is that ransomware groups continue to evolve, trying to enter new, more lucrative markets within them. As we all know, industry certainly ticks this box.
