Samsung’s custom AI refrigerator will soon recognize thousands of items thanks to Gemini

AI Video & Visuals

Almost all Samsung home appliances now have some form of AI.

AI has arrived.

AI has arrived.

[gentle rhythmic music]

AI is here too.

This is an old software version

Samsung’s AI Vision bespoke refrigerator.

Now you can put about 37 kinds of ingredients here.

So let’s put some garlic in there, for example.

The camera takes a photo and identifies what it is.

The log will now be logged to the screen.

and it will be useful in the future

If you are at the grocery store.

Is garlic necessary?

Well, it’s already visible and recognized that it’s there.

For example, if you put something like a can of cola,

They actually take photos,

However, that information must be entered manually.

So, although this is one of the most important;

visually identifiable items around the world,

I don’t know that this is a Coke can.

That’s where software updates come in.

Object recognition in older software was local;

New software, on the other hand, does this all in the cloud.

And all of them are actually powered

Powered by Google’s Gemini large-scale language model.

Not really accessible yet

Gemini voice assistant for this refrigerator.

You’re still dealing with Bixby or Alexa.

All I have to do is pop this can of Coke in.

and on the screen

Automatically identified and labeled

This was indeed a can of Coke that I had put in there.

I didn’t have to enter any information myself.

You can see it in action here

All of these different products.

Remember, we start with 37 items.

It used to be possible to identify thousands of people.

This can be specifically identified as:

Classic DiGiorno pizza.

Now, this is a cloud-based process, so

Privacy risks always increase.

Samsung says that if these cameras capture your face,

The face becomes blurry.

So this is an additional privacy precaution.

However, this version has inherent privacy risks

Compare with old software.

This software update is available for refrigerators starting in 2024.

Using that AI vision camera,

It is expected to be rolled out in early May.
