Samsung further strengthens foundry leadership and customer commitment with advanced process roadmap

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today unveiled its latest foundry innovations and business strategy at its 7th Annual General Meeting.th Annual Samsung Foundry Forum (SFF) 2023.

Under the theme of “Innovation Beyond Boundaries,” this year’s forum delved into Samsung Foundry’s mission to meet customer needs in the age of artificial intelligence (AI) through advanced semiconductor technology.

This year’s event was attended by more than 700 guests from Samsung Foundry’s customers and partners, 38 of which hosted their own booths to share the latest technology trends in the foundry industry.

As part of its business strategy to strengthen its competitive edge as a leading foundry service, Samsung Foundry today announced the following:

Leading the industry with expanded 2nm applications and special processes

At the event, Samsung announced detailed plans and performance levels for mass production of the 2nm process.

The company plans to start volume production of its 2nm process for mobile applications in 2025, expand to HPC in 2026, and automotive in 2027. Samsung’s 2nm process (SF2) offers 12% better performance, 25% better power efficiency and 5% less area than his 3nm process (SF3).

Mass production of the SF1.4 will start in 2027 as planned.

Starting in 2025, Samsung will launch foundry services for 8-inch gallium nitride (GaN) power semiconductors for consumer, data center and automotive applications.

To ensure the cutting edge of 6G, 5nm radio frequency (RF) is also under development and expected to be available in the first half of 2025. Samsung’s 5nm RF process is 40% more power efficient and 50% less. It will increase the area compared to his previous 14nm process.

Additionally, the company plans to add automotive applications to 8nm and 14nm RF, expanding beyond mobile applications currently in production.

Respond to customer needs by stabilizing the supply chain and expanding production capacity

Under a ‘Shell First’ operating strategy aimed at better meeting customer demands, Samsung Foundry commits to investing and building capacity by adding new production lines in Pyeongtaek, South Korea and Taylor, Texas I maintain my posture. The company plans to start mass production of mobile and other foundry products in Pyeongtaek Route 3 in the second half of the year. Construction of Taylor’s new factory is progressing according to original plans and is expected to be completed by the end of the year, with operations expected to begin in the second half of 2024.

Samsung will continue to expand its production base in Yongin, South Korea to strengthen Samsung’s next-generation foundry services. Yongin is a nearby city located about 10 km east of Samsung’s Hwaseong and Giheung campuses.

Leading the ‘Beyond Moore’ Era with New Multi-Die Integration Alliance

To address the rapidly growing chiplet market for mobile and HPC applications, Samsung is working with partners and leading memory, substrate packaging and test companies to launch the MDI Alliance.

The MDI Alliance is leading innovation in stacking technology by forming a packaging technology ecosystem for 2.5D and 3D heterogeneous integration. Samsung works with partners across the ecosystem to provide one-stop turnkey services that better support customer innovation.

Samsung plans to proactively respond to customer and market needs by developing customized packaging solutions tailored to the individual needs of various applications such as HPC and automotive.

Working with partners to push boundaries and enhance fabless support

Following the Samsung Foundry Forum, Samsung will host the Samsung Advanced Foundry Ecosystem (SAFE™) Forum on June 28th with the theme of Accelerating the Speed ​​of Innovation.

Samsung works with over 100 partners across Electronic Design Automation (EDA), Design Solution Partners (DSP), Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT), Cloud and IP to create a foundry ecosystem that drives customer success promote mutual growth.

Over the years, Samsung has supported increased collaboration among partners across the foundry ecosystem, evolving the boundaries of design infrastructure from 8 inches to the latest GAA processes.
