There is a new MVP slate in the labor market.
Over the past few months, companies like Openai, Meta and Humanity have been ramming through Silicon Valley as conflicts like Openai, Meta and Humanity for the elite groups of the best work in artificial intelligence.
Openai CEO Sam Altman called it “the most intense talent market I've seen in my career” on CNBC's Squawk Box on Friday the day after Openai released its latest repetition of its flagship model, the GPT-5.
But Altman says that fighting a select few may not be necessary.
“I'm sure it's way bigger than people think,” he said. “Some businesses in this space have decided to chase after some shiny names, but I think there are probably tens of thousands of people in the world who can do this kind of work, like the thousands of people we can find.”
Recently, AI CEO Alexandr Wang and former Github CEO Nat Friedman were able to co-lead the newly created Superintelligence Labs, Meta has made an offer of up to $300 million over four years to bring OpenAI researchers to the top. It also provided Openai employees with a huge signature bonus for the switch. Business Insider previously reported that many researchers from top AI startups have been earning in the mid-6 digits for their skills.
More than any other field, AI is potentially betting beyond its proven track record as companies run towards still theoretical goals like artificial general information and super intelligence.
The true value of top AI talent lies in its ability to breakthrough.
“The hope is that they know how to discover the rest of the ideas to get close together, that there are a handful of algorithmic ideas and medium-sized people who can understand them,” he said.
