Search augmentation generation is one of the key techniques adopted by developers to enrich AI applications with contextually relevant information by connecting LLMs to vector databases. However, developing and securing RAG applications can be challenging. There are several complex components as well as safety and security risks to manage. Common examples of these risks include data exfiltration and injection attacks, data contamination, and sensitive information exposure.

Pinecone has announced the release of Canopy in the second half of 2023 as a simple answer to the complexities of RAG application development. Canopy includes components such as data embedding, query optimization, and context retrieval. In conjunction with the Pinecone vector database, developers will be able to have production-ready RAG applications running in under an hour.

Integrating Robust Intelligence with Canopy provides an additional layer of protection to Pinecone’s secure vector database, ensuring the integrity of RAG applications.

When connected to the Robust Intelligence Platform and security scanning is enabled, uploads to the vector database are inspected for risks such as tainted data and indirect prompt injection. Every time data is uploaded to the database, a new security scan is automatically triggered. Malicious data is flagged and intercepted, preventing adversaries from using the RAG application as a foothold to steal personal data, distribute harmful content, or launch broader, more harmful campaigns.

“Pinecone's mission is to build enterprise-grade, knowledgeable AI that developers can deploy in production,” said Elan Dekel, vice president of products at Pinecone. “We launched Canopy to enable developers to quickly and easily build GenAI applications using search augmentation generation. Working with like-minded partners like Robust Intelligence allows us to further these efforts by providing customers with a seamless and powerful solution to secure RAG applications built with Pinecone and the Canopy framework.”

This shift-left approach to AI security empowers developers to identify and mitigate potential vulnerabilities earlier in the process. It also encourages more proactive communication with other AI stakeholders, so security and compliance teams can ensure that RAG applications have rigorous measures in place to prevent breaches.

“Pinecone is a pioneer in the AI field and its vector database is trusted by some of the world's leading companies,” said Yaron Singer, CEO of Robust Intelligence. “As more organizations develop and deploy RAG applications, it's important they take steps to protect against risk, especially when connecting to highly sensitive data. We're partnering with Pinecone to make security a smooth part of RAG application development.”
