Ring presents an AI-powered video description with the latest update

AI Video & Visuals

The ring leverages the power of generator AI with new features designed to help users better understand motion alerts from doorbells and cameras. Called Video Description, the tool is currently being deployed in beta to ring home premium subscribers in the US and Canada, and aims to make home surveillance more efficient by providing real-time, text-based summaries of detected activities.

“This new Generation AI (GEN AI) feature helps you quickly distinguish between emergency and everyday activities with a quick glance at your phone,” wrote Jamie Siminoff, founder and chief inventoryer of Ring, in a post on the company's website. Siminoff returned to work in the ring in April 2025 after serving as CEO of commercial access company Latch, Latch and Now Door.

The description focuses on what was generated when motion was detected – the most important thing. For example, a user might receive an alert such as: “People are going up the stairs with their black dogs.” or “The two are peering into the white car in the driveway.”

“The video description uses actual intelligence to explain the main subject that caused the motion alert and what actions they take,” explains Siminoff. “We designed the feature. It's intentionally concise and lets you quickly identify whether something requires your attention.”

According to Siminoff, launching the video description is just the beginning. Future enhancements include the ability to intelligently group related motion events into a single notification and send alerts only when something normal occurs.

“It brings peace of mind by learning your housing routine, becoming smarter and notifying you only when it's normal,” writes Siminoff.

Siminoff adds that AI is reshaping how the company thinks about home security innovation. Advances in AI are challenging companies to think about how Ring would be built today if AI was launched as the foundation.

“We feel like we're back to the very early days of the ring once again, thinking about the unlimited possibilities of new experiences that we can invent for our neighbors,” says Siminoff.

Video description works with all currently available ring cameras and video doorbells and can be enabled via the Ring app.
