According to a report by job listing site Indeed, the demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning engineers is growing significantly, surging by 433% from 2022 onwards, reflecting the increasing reliance on AI and ML technologies across a range of sectors.
This was followed by a 314% increase in demand for business process outsourcing executives, highlighting the continued expansion of the outsourcing and customer service industries, the report said.
According to Indeed's report, which is based on demand data from January 2022 to June 2024 across a range of occupations and industries, these two roles are driving significant employment growth at either end of the skills spectrum, despite the vastly different skills required.
The report adds that while AI/ML engineers represent a highly specialised technical role, BPO executives indicate strong demand for more generalised, customer-focused roles.
Meanwhile, the report found that receptionists, travel consultants and electricians also featured prominently on the list, demonstrating the diversity of roles in demand.
Job postings for receptionists increased by 310%, highlighting the need for effective front office management and customer relations, while job postings for travel consultants increased by 285%, suggesting that the travel and tourism sector is reviving as people regain confidence in travelling post-pandemic. The trend is likely driven by a combination of increased leisure travel and a resumption of business travel, reflecting a broader recovery in the tourism sector, it added.
At a sector level, the sanitation and construction industries also saw the highest growth, with job vacancies increasing by 160 percent and 121 percent respectively, the report found.
Other areas seeing strong employment growth include education and medical research, reflecting the growing demand for health and education services.
“These trends provide valuable insights for both job seekers and employers and demonstrate how both tech and service-oriented roles are essential in the evolving employment landscape,” said Sashi Kumar, head of sales, Indeed India.
