washington [US]April 17 (ANI): Oscar-winning actor and producer Reese Witherspoon has sparked a debate online after urging her followers to learn about artificial intelligence.
Her latest post sparked a sharp divide online over the role of technology in daily life and the creative industries.
In an Instagram Reel that has racked up more than 1 million views, Witherspoon shared a personal anecdote from a recent meeting with book club members, highlighting what she sees as a growing gap in understanding of AI tools.
“I said to 10 people, ‘How many of you are using AI?’ And only three of them were using AI. Then I said, ‘Of those three, how many of you feel like you really know what you’re doing or are using it in the right way?’ And it was just one,” she said.
Reflecting on the exchange, Witherspoon added, “So if only 3 in 10 women are using AI, that means 70 percent of that group isn’t catching up. What I’ve learned about technology is that if you don’t understand a little bit from the beginning, it flies by. So you have to learn a little bit to catch up.”
The actor emphasized the urgency, saying, “Let’s be real, our kids are using this every day.” She encouraged her followers to “learn the basics together” to “make our daily lives easier and better,” concluding: “The time is now, everyone.”
The video quickly garnered attention and support from industry insiders. Actor Kerry Washington responded, “This is it,” and talent agent Maha Dakhil wrote, “So true.”
However, the message also faced criticism from some users and commentators. A social media user wrote, “This is different. We are not being left behind. We are rejecting a future that is not designed for us. Instead of acting like this is all inevitable, why not use your privilege to fight back?”
Others urged people to look deeper into the environmental and social impacts of this technology, with one Instagram user commenting: “Start educating with the data center…about the amount of power they use and the dire impact on the communities they reside in.”
Another wrote, “Or… if we all decided not to use it, those who own it would no longer be able to make any profit from it, and our brains, our society, and our environment would thank us!”
On the work front, Reese Witherspoon is expanding the Legally Blonde series with a prequel series, Elle (2026), and a third film.
She returned for Season 5 of The Morning Show in 2027 and has produced projects including Polly Pocket and Nightingale. Additionally, she is developing a film adaptation of her debut thriller novel, Gone Before Goodbye, which she co-wrote with Harlan Coben. (Ani)
