Reddit shares rose more than 10% after the company announced it had signed a partnership agreement with artificial intelligence (AI) startup OpenAI.

Under the agreement, companies developing ChatGPT chatbots will have access to Reddit content, while also bringing AI-powered features to the social media platform.

The announcement highlights Reddit's efforts to expand its revenue streams beyond advertising.

The deal also comes as a growing number of copyright holders are filing legal challenges over the use of their copyrighted material by AI companies.

The BBC has contacted Google, Microsoft and OpenAI for comment.

In recent months, OpenAI has also reached deals with several publishers, including The Associated Press and the Financial Times.

Meanwhile, Google announced a partnership in February to give the tech giant access to Reddit data to train its AI models.

Both the European Union and the United States have raised questions about whether training AI tools with such content constitutes copyright infringement or falls under the fair use or “temporary copying” exception.

The issue is being heard in U.S. courts, with several lawsuits separately representing people including Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin, comedian Sarah Silverman, and The New York Times. It is being tried.

The company said GPT-4o will be rolled out to all users of ChatGPT, including non-subscribers.

It's faster than previous models and is programmed to make responses to prompts sound more conversational.

The new version allows you to read and discuss images, translate languages, and identify emotions from visual representations. It also has memory, so you can recall previous prompts.
