According to Tiobe, Python, the highest-ranked language ever in the programming language's popular Tiobe index, is being supported by AI coding assistants.
In July 2025, Python received a highest rating of 26.98% on the monthly index dating back to June 2001.
In a breaking news about this month's rankings, Tiobe CEO Paul Jansen theorized that AI assistants helped to increase the popularity of Python. “We thought Python couldn't grow any further, but the AI code assistant took it a step further to Python,” says Jansen. He noted that there is an increasing number of code available from popular programming languages to train AI models. This trend is what appears to be the Tiobe Index, with the integration of the language at the top, Jansson said. “Why are you starting to learn new, obscure languages where AI support is not available? This is a modern way of not wanting to learn new languages that are rarely documented or have too few libraries that can help you.”
