Research centers where atoms and bytes meet, open datasets, industry collaborations
WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana – As student interest in computing-related majors and the societal impact of artificial intelligence and chips continues to grow rapidly, the Purdue University Board of Trustees announced on Friday (April 14) a major Announced Purdue Computing initiative.
Purdue Computes consists of three pillars: Academic Resources in the Computing Division, Strategic AI Research, and Semiconductor Education and Innovation. This story focuses on the second pillar, AI strategic research.
At the intersection of the virtual and the physical, Purdue will stand out between AI bytes and things that grow, make, and move: the longstanding strengths of universities and states.
The Purdue Institute for Physical AI (IPAI) will be the foundation for the university to advance unprecedented byte and atom research. By developing both basic AI and its applications to ‘We Grow, We Make, We Move’, a faculty member transforms his AI development through physical applications and vice versa.
The creation of IPAI is based on the unique strengths of Purdue University’s extensive faculty input and excellent research. Open agricultural data, neuromorphic computing, deep fake detection, edge AI systems, smart transportation data, and AI-based manufacturing are among the various cutting-edge topics explored by IPAI through its current and emerging university research centers. . The Center is the backbone of IPAI and builds on Purdue’s existing and developing AI and cybersecurity strengths and workforce development. New degrees and certificates for both residential and online students will be created for students interested in physical AI.
Karen Prout, executive vice president of research, said: “Laboratory and classroom successes on these topics will help tomorrow’s leaders meet the world’s evolving challenges.”
- The 17-person faculty steering committee is made up of interdisciplinary groups from many of Purdue’s colleges and campus departments.
- IPAI includes an advisory board made up of alumni in leadership positions across the AI industry. This includes Tesla, Intel, Apple and Ring.
- Purdue’s leadership in defining physical AI will also be supported by the hiring of 50 new faculty members over the next five years. These faculty members will be tenured into college departments across campuses while retaining their affiliation with IPAI. This addition is enhanced by 250 Presidential Doctoral Excellence Awards that will be rolled out to recruit the best doctoral students in the field over the same period.
- Industry collaboration is a planned feature of Purdue’s AI ambitions. Eli Lilly and Company on AI in drug discovery and drug manufacturing and High Alpha on creating AI-based startups is one of his industries in Indiana partnering with the university, particularly in collaborative research talent recruitment and workforce development. is.
