Professor Matsuo of the University of Tokyo selected for UN AI panel

NEW YORK, February 4 (Jiji Press) – Professor Yutaka Matsuo of the University of Tokyo is among 40 experts recommended by the United Nations chief to serve on a new independent international scientific commission on artificial intelligence.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Wednesday announced a list of 40 experts recommended to the panel established under a General Assembly resolution passed last August. This selection will be approved by the General Assembly soon.

Guterres said the commission would be “the first global, fully independent scientific body dedicated to closing the knowledge gap in AI and assessing its real impact across economies and societies.”

“At a time of deepening geopolitical tensions and increasing technological competition, there is an urgent need for common ground,” he said. “That’s what this panel can provide.”

The panel attracted over 2,600 applicants. The selected experts specialize in a variety of areas including machine learning, cybersecurity, child development, and human rights.
