Book Review
Muhammad Omar Iftikhar's latest book, Player AI, is a riveting science fiction story that explores the transformative potential of artificial intelligence and machine learning in the world of sports. Set against the backdrop of the T20 Cricket World Cup, Omar conceives the story around the Pakistan cricket team and its governing body, the Pakistan Cricket Alliance (PCA). Omar captures the tension of a cricket match and draws the reader into the heart-pounding action with his vivid descriptions of the game. From the resounding sound of the bat hitting the ball to the thunderous applause of the crowd, every moment is portrayed in meticulous detail.
The story focuses on Yasir Ehsan, the resolute captain of Pakistan's T20 team, who collapses during practice and is diagnosed with a terminal illness. Beyond the thrill of the game, readers are forced to ponder deeper themes when the PCA secretly introduces Player AI, an android originally intended as the team's practice partner. But with the T20 World Cup just weeks away and Pakistani fans and media eager to witness Yasir Ehsan's talents in the tournament, the PCA is forced to put a secret plan into action. Identical to the T20 captain in appearance and abilities, Player AI raises questions about obedience and autonomy, given its advanced machine learning capabilities and ability to obscure human thinking.
Omar imaginatively connects technology and AI with the sport of cricket, which holds a special place in the hearts of Pakistanis. Themes of leadership, loyalty and sacrifice intersect with ideas of identity, inclusivity and the meaning of existence for humans and sentient beings, personified by the Player AI. Moments of introspection arise as the Player AI poses puzzling questions to the PCA, while moments of humour bring a smile to the reader's face.
Published by Daastan Publishing, with whom Omar previously co-authored 20 Steps to Writing Articles (2022), Player AI marks an important addition to Omar's literary endeavors. It is Omar's second science fiction novel, following his debut novel Divided Species (2020), in which an extraterrestrial travels to Karachi to excavate alien artifacts. It was the first science fiction novel set in Karachi written by a Pakistani. Meanwhile, Player AI is the only science fiction novel written by a Pakistani based on the game of cricket.
As the T20 World Cup unfolds in the story, the stakes soar and it becomes clear that the performance of player AI will be key to the team's success. But questions of ethics and morality emerge, testing the limits of technology and human intervention.
Omar uses sports to reflect on the limits of technological innovation. Player AI explores the ethical and moral quandaries surrounding AI-based athletes and how the relationship between humans and machines may evolve if such athletes become a reality in the near future. Player AI blends sports, speculative fiction, and human drama in the Pakistani context. With a compelling narrative, rich characters, and a seamless storyline, the story is a fascinating exploration of the intersection of technology and the human psyche.
