Manila — President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. met Friday with award-winning actor and humanitarian George Clooney and international human rights lawyer Amal Clooney to discuss shared efforts to advance press freedom and promote the ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI).
During a courtesy visit to Manila’s Malacañang Palace, Mr. Marcos emphasized his administration’s continued efforts to protect press freedom and ensure an environment where journalists can fulfill their duties without fear or restriction.
Meanwhile, according to a press release from the Presidential Communications Office (PCO), Clooney highlighted the growing potential of AI to expand access to justice around the world.
Mr. Marcos welcomed her insights and emphasized the importance of establishing a responsible regulatory framework to ensure that AI technologies are used in the public interest.
“President Marcos welcomed this and added the need for responsible regulation to ensure the ethical and safe use of AI,” the PCO said.
Mr. Marcos reaffirmed his administration’s firm commitment to protecting press freedom and expressed his hope that the Clooneys’ stay in the Philippines would be productive and memorable.
Mr. Marcos was accompanied by First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos and Secretary-General Lucas Bersamin.
The Clooneys are in the Philippines to headline the Social Good Summit 2025 hosted by the online news platform on November 16 at Lanson Place in Pasay City.
The couple is expected to speak about global issues affecting free speech, civil liberties and emerging technologies.
George Clooney is widely known not only for his accomplishments in the film industry, but also for his humanitarian advocacy work.
A renowned barrister specializing in international law and human rights, Amal Clooney is Professor of the Practice of International Law at the Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford, a Senior Research Fellow at the Oxford University of Technology and Justice, and an Honorary Research Fellow at St Hugh’s College, Oxford University.
