Bridge health monitoring and transitioning from infrequent manual structural inspections to leveraging sensors, digital twins, and spatial intelligence presents significant challenges. Cozzi added, “This continuous field data integration will move beyond static documentation and enable agencies to evolve from reactive remediation to proactive and resilient asset management that protects the long-term integrity of our most critical public systems.”
Collision avoidance
Although bridges are mostly stationary, the real world is increasingly occupied by autonomous systems such as self-driving cars, robots, and drones. And wherever there are moving systems, there is a risk of collision.
