Opera has announced the launch of its new AI-powered “Opera One” web browser, which the company describes as “the future of browsing.”
Here’s the scoop – Opera One is the familiar Opera browser, but much improved. And we’re not just talking about new paint. We’ve reimagined and rebuilt Opera from the ground up, paving the way for a new era where AI is more than just an add-on, it’s at the heart of Opera. your browsing experience.
“As browser innovation enthusiasts, we thought it appropriate to rethink the role of the browser in light of recent developments in the AI space. We didn’t just add AI services to our browser: “We went back to the drawing board and redesigned our flagship browser. Opera One is built around Aria, our native browser AI. It is the culmination of our work to date,” said Joanna Czajka, Director of Product at Opera.
New features include Aria, its native browser AI, new modular design, tab islands, and more.
First Opera browser with native browser AI
Aria, Opera’s new browser AI, is a key component of Opera One and the first Opera feature to bear the Opera name. Aria gives Opera One users free access to leading generative AI services. The service is the result of a collaboration between Opera and OpenAI, but with expanded functionality.
Based on Opera’s own Composer AI engine, Aria connects to OpenAI’s GPT and is enhanced with additional features such as adding live results from the web. Aria is an expert in both the web and browser, enabling users to search information on the web, generate text and code, answer product queries, and interact with AI. When it comes to customer support, Aria is familiar with Opera’s entire database of support documents and leverages the company’s current product knowledge to answer your questions.
Opera One users also get a new command line that allows them to use the ctrl+/ (Win) or cmd+/ keyboard shortcuts to display overlays and interact with Aria. Whenever a question arises, you can use the command line to ask Aria a question, immediately interact with Browser AI’s response in the sidebar, or return to browsing.
Aria will also take advantage of Opera’s AI Prompts feature, which was introduced in early access earlier this year. After user feedback and extensive testing, Aria now has the ability to get contextual prompts by right-clicking or highlighting text in the browser.
Recognizing the popularity of ChatGPT, Opera One also offers users access to popular services from the browser’s sidebar.
In contrast to other browser solutions, Opera’s AI is a user-controlled experience. This means that users can choose to opt-in to AI Services or not engage with AI Services. To use Aria, you’ll need to open Browser AI in the sidebar and log in, or sign up if you don’t have a free Opera account.
Tub Islands
A key element of Opera One is Tab Islands, a way to change the behavior of tabs in your browser. Tabs are a fundamental part of browsing, but the standard way of working with tabs hasn’t evolved much since the early days of the web, and the richness of the internet and the myriad ways we use it are no longer enough. It does not correspond. For example, researchers found that the browser’s existing tab design made it difficult to navigate between a series of tasks. Additionally, according to Opera’s own research, the majority of people are overwhelmed by tab clutter, and he wishes his web browser could do more to manage this.
Opera One’s Tab Island addresses this challenge. Tab Islands are a new way to keep related tabs organized in a contextual and intuitive way without forcing users to change their habits or think. Users have more flexibility when working with tabs. You can keep different browsing contexts separate, tab around, collapse islands to a smaller size to come back to later, save to bookmarks and pinboards.
As the user creates a travel itinerary, researching hotels and routes, the tabs opened in that context are grouped together in a dedicated tab island. Or do they have tons of Google Docs for work? They automatically get their own island of tabs too. As more tab islands are created as they browse, Opera One users can easily identify the topic of focus and switch between them.

Not only did Opera rethink the look and feel of its interface, it also redesigned the internals of its desktop browser, implementing a new browser architecture with multi-threaded compositors to provide a faster and smoother user interface layer. With its multi-threaded compositor, Opera One is the first major Chromium-based browser to deliver a never-before-seen UI. Combined with new modular design principles, this new architecture allows for the implementation of new features, allowing Opera to continue to differentiate itself from other his Chromium-based browsers.
