OpenAI releases Sora AI video app for Android

AI Video & Visuals

Launched on iOS a month ago, OpenAI has finally released its Sora app on Android, allowing more users to generate eerily realistic AI videos.

Sora is the name of OpenAI’s video generation model, but it’s also the name of a new social app the company released in late September of this year. The app was first available on iOS, but now it’s finally on Android.

“Sora by OpenAI” is now available for download from the Play Store.

You’ll need an invitation code to actually use the app, but once you have one, you’ll be able to create videos using prompts, including the ability to start from an existing image and insert yourself or someone else into that video. OpenAI says the app produces “hyperreal videos” with “unprecedented realism.”

In fact, the videos Sora creates are often eerily realistic, which is a big reason why the app spread like wildfire on social media shortly after its iOS debut. Google Gemini can also generate realistic videos using Veo 3, but Sora packages that functionality into its own dedicated experience, and also adds some community features.

OpenAI describes what you can do with the Sora app for Android:

  • Create videos in seconds: Start with a prompt or image, and Sora generates complete videos with audio inspired by your imagination.
  • Collaborate and play: Cast yourself or your friends in a video. Remix challenges and trends as they evolve.
  • Choose a style: Go cinematic, animated, photorealistic, cartoony, or completely surreal.
  • Remix and make it your own: Put your own spin on someone else’s work. You can swap out characters, change the atmosphere, add new scenes, and expand the story.
  • Find your community: Community features make it easy to share your work and see what others have created.

Sora was initially available only in the United States and Canada, but has now expanded to Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Taiwan, and Vietnam.
