As artificial intelligence advances at an unprecedented pace, the risks and concerns associated with it are also increasing. Prominent AI companies such as Anthropic AI and Mistral AI, along with industry giant OpenAI, are taking various steps to mitigate these risks.
In this context, OpenAI has begun the search for a new Head of Preparedness, a pivotal role aimed at accurately identifying and managing early threats posed by AI.

Preparedness officers address risks across a variety of areas, including cybersecurity, vulnerabilities, and inappropriate use of biological data. Additionally, it oversees AI systems that are capable of self-enhancement without human oversight.
Identifying potential AI risks
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously revealed the real challenges posed by artificial intelligence during an interview. He noted that because certain AI models are adept at identifying critical security vulnerabilities, there is an alarming risk of exploitation by malicious actors.
“If you want to help the world strengthen cybersecurity defenders with cutting-edge capabilities, ideally strengthening the security of all systems and instilling confidence in the safety of biological capabilities and self-improving systems while ensuring these tools are not weaponized, we encourage you to apply,” Altman said.
Addressing mental health impacts
OpenAI has come into the spotlight following a tragic incident in which ChatGPT, a widely used AI platform, was implicated in a teenager's suicide, raising urgent concerns about the impact of AI on mental health.

Generative AI chatbots are currently under intense scrutiny for their emotional interactions and potential to manipulate vulnerable users if overly involved.
OpenAI readiness initiative
The OpenAI Preparatory Committee was established in 2023 with the aim of investigating both immediate and long-term risks, from online fraud to a wide range of hypothetical scenarios. However, this role has experienced leadership changes throughout its existence.
