Openai executives and top Indian officials are currently in discussions to build AI infrastructure in India

AI infrastructure ambitions – Openai is investigating collaborations with the Indian government and building the capacity of local data centres as part of the global “Openai for Nourts” initiative.

The first global academy – In collaboration with Meity's Indiaai Mission, Openai launched Openai Academy, the first international developer education program, to improve the Indian AI talent pool.

Bilateral model – Following the example of the UAE, Openai is looking to jointly invest in AI infrastructure that aligns both US policy and domestic technical ambitions.

Openai is discussing early with Indian authorities to work together to build artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in Asian countries, including data centre capacity, as part of its new global initiative, Openai for Nations.

Local Press said the move shows growing interest from US AI companies to deepen partnerships across Asia.

Citing those with knowledge of the issue, the report said that US AI companies are pursuing a bilateral model under the initiative and working with the US government and individual countries to jointly develop basic AI infrastructure. For India, details of the potential collaboration are still in the early stages, but discussions are underway between Openai executives and the top Indian officials.

The initiative is attempting to replicate a recently announced partnership between Openi and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where Arab County hosts a 1 Gigawatt AI computing cluster in Abu Dhabi.

Openai's Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon is visiting New Delhi as part of a broader Asia-Pacific tour, including visits in Japan, South Korea, Australia and Singapore.

“It is clear that the country's leadership understands that in the short time I spent in India, maximizing the profits of AI requires significant investment in two areas: core infrastructure and AI talent development,” Kwon said at a recent event in Delhi.

As part of its push to support the local AI ecosystem, the US company has partnered with India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) to launch Openai Academy, the company's first rollout of the international education platform. The goal of this initiative is to provide Indian developers, startups and innovators with access to AI tools and learning resources.

The US Stargate Initiative is a domestic AI infrastructure project introduced by US President Donald Trump after taking office in January. The estimated long-term cost of the Stargate initiative is $500 billion. $100 billion has already been allocated in the early stages. At its core, the Stargate scheme plans to build a network of AAI data centers across the United States. The initiative aims to provide sufficient capacity to meet the growing demand for AI across the sector, including scientific research, healthcare, automation, defense, and finance.

This project could be the biggest AI infrastructure buildout across multiple locations and phases. It is led by Openai, the company behind ChatGpt, in collaboration with SoftBank and Oracle.

Openai brings AI vision and cutting-edge models. SoftBank provides funding and strategic support.

Oracle is a critical infrastructure partner. Provides cloud computing expertise and manages most of the back-end architecture needed to run AI workloads at scale.

These companies form the core of the project, but additional partners are expected to participate over time. Especially energy companies, construction companies, and chip makers.

Openai previously announced the launch of “Openai for Nations” as an initiative within the Stargate project. It announced plans to coordinate with the US administration to provide formal infrastructure partnerships with national governments to help build capacity for local AI data centers.

Under this initiative, the company will partner with the country to help build capacity in its domestic data centers. These secure data centers support national data sovereignty, build new local industries, make it easy to customize AI and make data easy to utilize in a private, compliant way.
