OpenAI on Monday announced its latest artificial intelligence large-scale language models that are easier and more intuitive to use.
The new model, called GPT-4o, is an update from the company's previous GPT-4 model, which was released about a year ago. This model will also be made available to free customers, giving everyone access to his OpenAI cutting-edge technology through ChatGPT.
GPT-4o allows ChatGPT to interact using text, voice, and so-called visuals. This means you'll be able to view and have conversations about screenshots, photos, documents, or charts that users upload. Mira Murati, chief technology officer at OpenAI, said ChatGPT will also have memory capabilities, allowing it to learn from previous conversations with users and provide real-time translation.
“This is the first time we've really taken a big step forward in terms of ease of use,” Murati said during a live demonstration from the company's San Francisco headquarters. “This interaction becomes more natural and much easier.”
This new release comes as OpenAI seeks to stay ahead of the growing competition in the AI arms race. Rivals like Google and Meta are working to build increasingly powerful large-scale language models that can be used to power AI tools into a variety of their products. Meanwhile, the latest GPT release could be a boon for Microsoft, which has invested billions of dollars in OpenAI to incorporate its AI technology into its products.

OpenAI executives demonstrated voice conversations with ChatGPT to get real-time instructions to solve math problems, tell bedtime stories, and get coding advice. ChatGPT could speak not only in a natural human-like voice, but also in a robotic voice, and could even sing some of its responses. The tool also allowed viewing and discussion of chart images.
They also presented a model to detect user emotions. In one case, he listened to an executive's breathing and encouraged him to calm down. And by automatically translating and responding, it is now possible to have conversations in multiple languages.
Murati said OpenAI will release a ChatGPT desktop app with GPT-4o functionality, giving users another platform to interact with the company's technology.
Updated technology and features will be rolled out to ChatGPT in the coming months.
